Oil prices surged and stocks tumbled worldwide on Thursday as Iran escalated shipping attacks in a critical tanker route.
Global crude spiked above $100 a barrel on Thursday, crossing a key benchmark. The rise in oil prices defied a U.S. effort hours earlier to reassure markets with an announcement of the second-largest ever release from the nation's petroleum reserve.
A selloff hit Wall Street as traders feared economic fallout from a potentially prolonged bout of elevated oil prices.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 620 points, or 1.3%, while the S&P 500 dropped 1.2%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq declined 1.6%.
Oil markets are suffering a major supply shortage due to an Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a trading route that facilitates the transport of about one-fifth of the global oil supply.

In the nearly 10 days since the State Department directed non-emergency government employees to leave Iraq amid the war with Iran, the U.S. has struggled to remove all personnel impacted by the order from potential danger, two U.S. officials tell ABC News.
Officials say U.S. diplomatic missions across the Middle East were given little warning in the run up to the strikes, and that even though conditions in countries like Iraq quickly deteriorated to a point where an ordered departure for non-emergency personnel would be expected, days passed before the orders were formally issued.
Military flights to remove personnel from Baghdad, where the U.S. embassy is located, were delayed by several days after the order was issued due to hazardous security conditions, the officials said..................
Though heavily fortified, American diplomatic facilities in Iraq have been under near-constant attack from Iran and its proxy militia groups since the U.S. initiated military action against Iran on Feb. 28...................

Lloyd’s of London has not restored war risk insurance for Gulf shipping.
No major shipping company has resumed transits.
Marine Traffic shows vessels at anchor, not moving.
Iran’s foreign policy advisor said this morning: we decide when it ends.
Trump said the Iranian navy was destroyed. We kept finding ships to bomb.
Trump said ships were safely transiting. The Energy Secretary deleted the tweet. Karoline Leavitt corrected the record.
Now Trump says the Strait is open.
