I first heard him sing on an old recording of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo, with Helmut Krebs, who was also terrific. Actually, the recording wasn't so old at the time. I was in college, late '60s; it was required listening in an early music course I took, and it blew me away. Wonderful tenors, both of them.
