The current generation was little more than episode after episode of realism intensive FPS stalwarts. I used to play quite a lot of FPS games back in the heady days of Dooms and Quakes, I think I've got all I can from that experience. It's probably why I play the Wii more than any other console, generally. I'll take the next episode of a Metroid over the latest Call of Duty. I think the reason why the current gen has left me rather unimpressed is the devotion to online play and the second-rating of the single player experience. I know that good AIs are tough to write, and good single player experiences require a bit more planning and creativity, but have we really given up trying?
GTA V's single-player mode has given me hope. With the humor restored to something resembling the GTA III series tongue in cheek satire (GTA IV was so dour and serious it was sad), and a bit more of the old mischievious fun through easter eggs and oddball things to discover, as well as the most expansive map to date, it has, along with Skyrim, saved the current generation from posting up a near perfect triumph of realism over just plain fun.
