they might have uncovered the answer to that question.
but I think probably because such tall, massive structures like the twin towers and Building 7 had never been demolished before, and they needed something more powerful than the conventional demolition materials to bring them down. you also want something that makes the least amount of noise and doesn't produce a lot of big explosive flashes (to best hide that it was a CD) -- for which an incendiary thermitic material would be ideal.
