Committing atrocities is often usual when an inferior force is fighting a superior force. The idea is to psyche 'em out, get them to want to just leave. Apaches took to wearing necklaces made of settlers' middle fingers. Superior forces tend to commit atrocities too, of course. I consider bombings and drone strikes pretty atrocious but then I'm not a big fan of war.

The Middle East will be uninhabitable in a few years anyway due to climate change. I can only hope Westerners will pull out before then and the followers of Islamic State can settle down to their normal stoning of adulteresses.
