In this sense 'hard' styles would be one of the many Karate or Tae Kwon Do styles and refer, to in my own words, More classic martial arts where power and kiai are emphasized as apposed to softer styles, like a Kung Fu that emphasizes other traits like the more flowing hand. It's a personal choice thing

Harder does not indicate more difficult or better. It is, in this case. Just a way to discribe a group of Styles with a history and style that differentiates how one completes techniques.

It's kind of a 'hard' thing to explain. haha
