would be a great time to dust off that treadmill and get into better shape. For a few years mine stood idle with my favorite coats on it. Time to actually hang up the coats and get some exercise.
Ya just never know and we could all be in better shape.
Hell might even feel a bit better.
Edit- Please check with your HealthCareProvider before starting anything like this.

(5,003 posts)I'd hate to think how much I'd weigh were it not for all of the walking I'm doing. Since the divorce I've also been hitting the local waking trails. Being outside more has certainly helped with my mental state as well.

(4,736 posts)When I first moved down here I tried a bicycle. I felt three times, managed to get myself up after each fall, my friends insisted on the tricycle. It's been 3 years and I haven't fallen once. After the third fall I realized I had lost some of my lower visual field, which can be problematic when stopping or navigating over even slightly rough terrain. Tricycles are quite as much fun as a bike, but I'm still in one piece so that's good. I swim in the summer but now it's cooled down and I don't do cold water well so it's back to the bike.

(37 posts)unless you have balance issues, I guess? Some cyclists ride like bats out of hell but you can be very leisurely. Safer, for sure.

(3,758 posts)Regardless the risk of a fall is to great for me these days.

(37 posts)I have seen people with these skiis that they use--I don't know what they're called. It's what people use in cross-country skiiing. A pole for each hand. Creates more stability but more range of motion than using a walker.
Prairie_Seagull
(3,758 posts)Not using a walker or any other devise myself but thanks for asking.
polly pureblood
(37 posts)is I would much rather ride a bicycle outside than be on a treadmill. Fresh air is so good for us and in the winter it's oxygenating. So you said you're afraid of falling off a bike and that is why I mentioned those poles. To be able to take advantage of the outdoors, the Sun, etc.

(3,758 posts)It's a bad time of the year to be outside in many parts of the country. Supposed to snow here last night didn't at my place. I get cha though, very invigorating.

(4,736 posts)If however you are coming to a stop sign and put your foot down to rest on the curb and the curb isn't exactly where you thought it was ...or if you have to go off the sidewalk to let someone in a wheelchair get buy and you misjudge the depth of the drop off. Yeah, it's quite possible to fall off your bike without it being a balance issue. And trust me, at 78 I ride very leisurely.

(3,170 posts)for not only cardio, but they hit almost every muscle.
Yes, you're right - one has to start very slow and for short periods of time ... and very gradually increase resistance and length of workout. I will be re-starting at the minimal resistance and go for one minute when I start again.
Form is of utmost importance in rowing. You can really screw up if you have poor form. There are videos that show how to use a rower properly.

(28,594 posts)I can use the machine but I can't get my hands all the way around the handles and it's quite uncomfortable. I wish they were adjustable. I actually have the same problem with the foot part, too. They are huge and I can't get my feet strapped all the way in. Those should be more adjustable, too. I'm not Sasquatch!

(10,274 posts)I have a really serious spinal issue, and I am not allowed to run. I'm short, so I have a small stride.
And I don't need any bells and whistles. I just want to be able to turn the thing on, and know that it will last for many years.
Any suggestions?
Prairie_Seagull
(3,758 posts)This is a decent treadmill for walkiing and with your small stride it could be a good fit and cost effective. Just watch the weight requirement. I doubt this will be a thing for you but worth a mention.
Good luck and seriously this could be a big change for your health.
I added a disclaimer in the OP. Start Slow please.

(10,274 posts)Luckily for me, weight is not an issue. I'm a tiny thing. I just want to stay healthy. Need the exercise, and movement, because I have pretty bad arthritis.
I live in a gated community, (not by choice, by inheritance, and too expensive to get out of it.) I'm surrounded by MAGA here. Lovely outdoor walks are often ruined by running into them. So having a treadmill indoors is not only good for my physical health, but my mental health and my blood pressure as well.

My spinal column is pushing into my spinal cord.
You should see the MRI's of my neck. Looks like a bunch of broken eggshells. I have to be very careful with everything I do. One bad move and I'm dead, or worse. I would take death over the 'worse' 100 times out of 100.

(742 posts)... I've had it for just about a year, used pretty much every day, and it's still like new. This is just my experience, though, so I'd recommend doing 'due diligence', and maybe walk on one in person if there's a dealer nearby. Here's a typical review, but check out others.
https://www.treadmillreviewguru.com/horizon-t101-treadmill-review/
I have cervical spine issues, so my running days are over, but I can do speed walking. 5 mph is about my upper limit right now ... this treadmill is way more than enough. It's really easy to change the speed on the fly, and you can also increase the grade, which is unusual for an inexpensive treadmill. Just for reference, I'm 80 yrs old, weigh about 130 lbs, and I'm about 5'6" tall, so I have a pretty short stride. I can't run right now, but I am sure I could do light jogging on this machine with no problem ... its top speed is about 10mph - I would never be able to do that!
I got mine last year for $700, but I also bought an extended 5-yr warranty from the store that covers everything, and I had them do their 'white glove' installation ... 2 guys brought it over and set it up for me. Those extras brought the cost up to about $1,000 ... still a good deal, as far as I'm concerned. All I had to do was get on and start walkin! The machine seems to be pretty solid ... way better than some more expensive machines I've seen that are just an open frame and the running belt. There's a video review at the link above that might give you an idea about where it's at.
Dem2theMax
(10,274 posts)I had already gone to their website to look at their different treadmills. It can get so confusing. So to have your feedback and personal experience will really help. I'm 3 in shorter than you, and just a few years younger, so the treadmill you are using sounds perfect for me.
I will definitely do all of my research, check the link you provided, as well as try to find somewhere local that carries the treadmill, so I can try it in person first. Sometimes that is the hardest part!
Again, thank you for taking the time to share your experience. You have no idea how much this has helped me.

(742 posts)There is a store close to me ... the purchasing experience was seamless. I don't know where they have stores, but the website says '100+ stores nationwide'. They have a store locator on the website. I think Horizon 'may' be one of their house brands. I bet they could help you nail down a dealer if you called customer service.
