With well funded think tanks, cultivating religious wackos, brainwashing people with propaganda radio and TV. This is about the interests of the extremely wealthy, and their use any issue they can find to whip up ordinary rubes to vote against their own interests.
The issue is wealth and power for the wealthiest and most powerful.
