Hillary worked tirelessly to deliver the message that Obama was the guy we needed and that the opportunity to elect him was an exciting prospect for our country.
Bernie mainly talked about the importance of beating Trump. He cultivated a narrative that she was only trying to appear progressive because he had somehow forced him to.
And this is not just about how Democrats or liberals voted. It is about how he affected her among swing-voters. Hillary had high poll numbers not too long before that election. The fake email scandal ended that. Bernie's portrayal of her fed into that story. He joined the GOP in portraying her in a negative light, in a deeply personal way. That helped them sell the fake email scandal and prevented her from rebounding, something she has been very good at over the years.
