Agree that embracing a new Cold War would be a mistake of epic proportions. It's discouraging though that there are always those in the Think Tanks who ideologically want for America to always have an "enemy." Cold Wars are fine with them. "War on Terror" replaced Cold War as a focus after the break up of Soviet Union and "9/11" occurred.
I have to hope the American people are sick of war and yet the coverage of Ukraine in MSM here seems to show we are back at it with Russia being the enemy. Even here on DU there are those who still do the "dog whistle" of "Evil Putin, Dictator, KGB Head," etc. and would want us to intervene.

Then there are the Neo-Cons who were on the ground there mixing with the Protestors in Kiev. Nuland, our State Department rep, photographed giving out Sweets and John McCain having photo op with the far right of the Svboda Party who claim to be NeoNazi. These actions seem to be in line with the beginning of your article about how we've operated in the past in countries to destabilize from within.

I think its an unfortunate development that we had a US Senator and DOS Rep on the ground meddling in Ukraine not so long before the coup. And makes me wonder if they thought this wouldn't inflame relations with Russia. I don't see how this fits with Obama's plan to wind down our warlike efforts if he has rogue elements in State Department interfering on Russia's Border.

I don't know how this will work out with carrots and sticks since we seem to still be using sticks with Kerry's hyperbolic language...

And I think we need to be concerned about Ukraine situation if we were in any way involved in that coup by supporting Neo Nazi's who are now in the new government right on Russia's border. This could get out of hand very easily and we have to hope that Putin has enough sense to be a clever fox rather than the brutal dictator that some feel he is.

as you said:

"This is a serious episode flaring up in the middle of a continuing long term game plan. The overall strategy remains correct. Embracing a new Cold War, in so many ways, would be a mistake of epic proportions. That truly should be the last resort."
