ya know, as a painter, i painted my life. myself as a wife and a mom, mostly.
i did abstract figures, w/o faces, because i was trying to reach for the universal.
people's reactions were always interesting. guys w mommy issues would pretty obvious shrink in front of them. i always said that the paintings were universal, because all of us had a mom, and for some of us that was just a mom-shaped hole in their lives. everyone saw something. most saw the obvious tenderness and love. but the ones who got uncomfortable always made me want to laugh out loud.
(wont even go into what my own kids see. lol)
that sexism is obvious to some, and invisible to others shows how far we have to go. and damn if i aint sick and tired of this road.
