Humanist Candidate Jillian Freeland Will Face GOP Rep. Doug Lamborn in Election
By Hemant Mehta, July 1, 2020

Since 2007, Rep. Doug Lamborn has represented Colorado’s 5th District in Congress. This is a guy who has argued Humanist chaplains should not be allowed in the military because the “chaplain corps is historically a religious institution.” His protests led to the rejection of one well-qualified applicant in 2018.

One reason he’s been able to promote this form of Christian Nationalism is because he represents a fairly red district. In 2018, he won his race with nearly 60% of the votes.

This time around, he may have a tougher battle. Running unopposed on the Democratic side and officially winning the primary last night was Jillian Freeland.

(snip)

I spoke with Freeland last night and asked her more about that label. She told me she was raised in Iowa as a Lutheran, but the turning point in her own religious history came when her dad and step-mom wouldn’t let her participate in sex education classes at school. She took that as a challenge — “Don’t tell me I can’t know something!” — and headed to the library instead. Not only did that incident push her away from organized religion, it inspired her to go into women’s healthcare as a career. (Talk about her parent’s plan backfiring…)

She also said her mother, an atheist, had a degree in religious studies, so they had many conversations about faith as she grew up.

Meanwhile, Doug Lamborn can’t even handle watching a gay wedding on the cartoon Arthur without trying to defund PBS.
