As a born-Catholic person I think that they hesitated because the priest is a high authority person and they also were probably questioning what exactly was happening here.

Disgraceful. That priest needs to be retired.

The onlookers are probably beating themselves up for not acting sooner and I have compassion for them under the circumstances.
