A small rural hospital in the 80s, and we were told that the 80 year old doctor who headed the physicians group was refusing to ask for funds to buy a defibrillator for the ER. He said that he wasn’t going to “electrocute some patient and get sued” and that trying to revive someone like that was “an attempt to deny God’s will.”
The Chairman of the Board, who was a very religious man, was furious. He said this kind of attitude was why so many people distrusted religion. He said if he were in the process of dying he wanted a doctor who would “fight God every step of the way.” He even said he would be glad to have an atheist as his doctor if that’s what it took.
And we did buy the defibrillator.
