3. Bribe his way out of hell isn't an accurate metaphor.

Praying for the dead is tied to an old piece of catholic dogma that is no longer in practice. It basically states there is a waiting period to get into heaven and its very long. Prayers said for someone who died supposedly shorten the individual's waiting period. There are a lot of historical donations to the church which were basically payments to have nuns pray to shorten their wait after they die. Hence why the building donated by a guy who wanted to be prayed for is a nunnery.

Its still crazy BS and basically another form of church extortion but its not strictly bribing your way out of hell. They called that one an "indulgence."
