According to the Cesspool Of Lies, Wiki: his real name was Metacom or Metacomet. He took the name "Phillip" to honor his father's friendship with those illegal immigrants who came over on the Mayflower. Considering how things worked out, he probably wanted his old name back.

At least Chief Pontiac ended up as an Art Deco masterpiece on the hood of a car. And he lit up along with the headlights on the most expensive models:
