In his later years, Ely worked as a horse trainer in Central Oregon, living with his wife in Terrebonne, near Bend, in a mobile home. He was still pursuing music, as well as his Christian faith: in 2012, he released a gospel album, "Love is All Around You Now," a mellow, string-laden collection miles from the young howler who once sang "Louie Louie."
