There was a time where they tried to retcon him into a gypsy but the Jewish identity stuck.

There is a scene in the fatal attractions arc where it shows Magento hovering over earth and says something along the lines of "He silently says a pray to a god he stopped believing in long ago."

EDIT: Also wanted to say that X2 is still my favorite X-men movie...but what do you expect from the one movie with nightcrawler in it [/font]
