12. I think a major part of the problem

is people are too separated from the scientific process. Ask a random person if they even know about the scientific peer review process and odds are they don't. Scientific advancements have been basically declared from on high for so long to the average person that they can't tell the difference between someone claiming something authoritatively and someone that actually knows something based on the research.
