It assumes that this is what happened before.

Meanwhile, if somebody's out preaching like that, he'd have a track record known to the "strangers" that he approached and asked. You'd assume that he'd have some familiarity with those he asked, as well.

They'd have gone like anybody would go with an itinerant preacher--because of what he said and what he'd done, not because of gossip.
