I'm old enough to remember when the benefits of meditation were regarded as superstitious nonsense by many atheists. I studied various world religions enough to see that they tended to start with mystical experiences, which tend to be universal, and then all too often that original perception was subverted by authoritarians making something rigid and repressive of it. I agree that we're a long way from understanding human consciousness. And the older I get, the more I hear of experiences that make me believe there is an afterlife, though not the heaven/hell scenario some religions preach. And I've heard some of those stories from hospice workers. Science can't explain them.
