According to this D3 is half the travel time of D4: http://soccer.si.com/2013/12/03/travel-considerations-world-cup/

The US does sort of benefit as well, but not with nearly the advantage as England. Since Ghana is in G3 the US will be able to use its "experience" with long travel time and adapt while Ghana will be experiencing it for the first time, so that gives us hope we can get rid of the bad Ghana luck.
