Instead I'll point out that by giving the mothership upgradeable weapons and systems, and better mobility, it improved the gameplay of Cataclysm over the original--which has never happened since, in any game, ever.

In the meantime, the original Homeworld team is working on what looks to me to be a spiritual prequel to Homeworld:

The thing I noticed off the bat there is that the flying vehicles had the same vector-tails that were so pretty and useful in Homeworld.

Anyway, yeah, I fully agree with others above who say play it as straight as you can: update the textures, and change nothing else. Especially you guys, Gearbox: if you're going to re-make one of the greatest games ever, the most important thing you can do is keep your own fingerprints off of it.
