I spent the beginning part of the game just flailing wildly at enemies, with only partial success, but after I spent a while hanging around the first Undead Burg bonfire just killing Hollow Warriors, I realized that I could be a bit more patient and therefore precise. I definitely started to notice that I was fighting in a different way depending on whether the Warriors were armed with swords, axes, or spears.
