I snapped mine while playing ultimate frisbee about 10-12 years ago. My fellow players heard it snap and saw me fall to the ground - the noise and my reaction made a few think I got shot.

If it's that, he's in much better shape than a torn achilles. There is no surgery for the plantaris.
