Willie Mays was able to make "The Catch" at the Polo Grounds because he played first at Rickwood Field, and Rickwood Field is HUGE (centerfield marked at 470 feet).

Willie Mays making the famous catch at the Polo Grounds was just another day at the office.

One nano second to process the hit, turn and run like the wind, then look up and find the ball exactly where you figured it would be.


That 483 mark at the Polo Grounds was that wicked 'Inside-the-park home run alley'. A 420 foot hit in the Polo Grounds would have been considered a stand-up-triple with any other centerfielder.
