Which makes it a fully automatic battle rifle. As it fires a full power .308 it does not qualify as an assault rifle. Many nations had adopted select fire .308 weapons as their main battle rifle, before tactical doctrine changed to engaging at closer ranges which favor the medium power cartridges of an assault rifle.

“Close enough for government use” is an odd phrase to choose if you are claiming that a semi automatic rifle which fires .223 automatically qualifies as an assault rifle - since governments generally don’t issue their armed forces with semi automatic “assault rifles”.
