(17,502 posts)1. Actually, private gun ownership is not rare
and the registration is recent and only applies to new sales, not really to private sales. Besides, getting purchase permit isn't that much different than a NICS check or a purchase permit in places like North Carolina and Michigan.
The problem in the US is not the guns themselves but the gun-culture. US-culture has less social obstacles and mediators that disencourage selfish (e.g.: committing a violent crime) behavior.
I seriously doubt he did an actual study in the US, since all the US criminologists think he is full of shit. Most American criminologists don't think gun laws do anything. Besides, the term "gun culture" means criminal gangs in Britain, which is not the same meaning it has here. Besides, quite frankly, I doubt he or she has ever been to the states to actually study the gun culture here or study our violent crime. Also, see Appeal to Authority logical fallacy.
Recreational shooting is widespread in Switzerland. Practice with guns is a popular form of recreation, and is encouraged by the government, particularly for the members of the militia.
Prior to the millennia about 200,000 people used to attend the annual Feldschiessen, which is the largest rifle shooting competition in the world. In 2012 they counted 130,000 participents.[13] For the 2015 Federal Shooting (Eidg. Schützenfest) 37'000 shooters are registered.[14] In addition, there are several private shooting ranges which rent guns.

Actually, not a new meme at all. However, I think adopting a military system more like theirs would be returning to what the Founders had in mind since they were not fans of professional militaries.
