Sat Dec 30, 2023: On this day, December 30, 1903, 602 people were killed in Chicago's Iroquois Theatre fire.

602 is the highest death toll for a single-building fire in the United States.. The Cocoanut Grove fire is in second place, coming in at 492 deaths. I'm leaving out the World Trade Center, because that was a deliberate act. Several structures were felled in that attack.

The Iroquois Theatre had been open for only five weeks when the fire occurred.
