I think you are right as to the religious teachings. I grew up in a Baptist church and was taught the same thing. Animals did not have souls. I think the thought that animals have souls made the church people very uncomfortable. Not me. To me, it is the only sensible way to look at things. Animals certainly have the "good" part of things monopolized. They don't hold grudges, don't kill for sport, and don't take more than they need.

I am still a believer, but I no longer participate in any type of organized religion.
