I used Dr. Pitcairn’s book to make my own dog food and it was gross (I’m vegan, so shredding up a leg of lamb really bothered me), but really helpful as far as my dog’s health. There are even vegan recipes for dogs (cats have too short a digestive tract and MUST have meat).
It’s a good-sized book, and you can find it pretty cheaply on eBay:
