5. Go to the best teaching/research hospital for cancers that you can reasonably reach

Your chances of survival are greatest in those settings. Each year, there is a ranking of the best hospitals in various disciplines and by region. Make sure where you're going is at or near the top. Without knowing where you live, I cant tell you where you should go. I'm in NC, and Duke Medical Center saved my life 20 years ago when I had breast cancer; they are at the top of my list.
