4. I think the main answer is what the Bechdel test (posted half a page or so down) shows.

Female characters are often not fully developed and are male defined more often than not.

How can an actress stand out if her character is such a shallow joke of a person. Compare most roles for women to the roles of women in the Good wife, for instance. There is no comparison.
