Because Kansas City is a crime-ridden city and I walked and/or took the bus nearly everywhere I went nearly the entire time I lived there. Only got physically attacked when I was wearing typical female attire, though (that didn't matter when my cat was being broken into, having the plate stolen, or the whole car stolen, or my place being broken into).

Where I was Grand Thefted (there wasn't enough contact to really call it an attack) last night was in a very low-crime, high SES area.
