1. they WANT Israel to counter strike with overwhelming force

They want 10,000 or 100,000 ( or more ) to be killed by Israel. That will build sympathy from the Muslim ( and especially Arab ) world. They will be martyrs.

They do not want peace between Israel and all of the surrounding Arab nations.

As someone on MSNBC said today... Hamas WANTS this to be about religion, because you cannot negotiate religion, but if Israel can make this about nationality and not religion with the Arab nations, well, you CAN negotiate about that.
