1. Low interest in the environment

Environmentalism used to be hot. Then we cleaned up the air, so you can actually see more than a block in most major cities. The rivers don't catch fire and burn for days, the way they used to. The trees along the highway no longer die from lead poisoning. And so on. We're complacent about the environment because, in spite of the worst efforts of the Reagan clan, we cleaned things up well enough to push the issue to the back burner.
