The only successful delisting effort was in the Northern Rocky Mountains, where Congress (through a rider to an appropriations bill) directed FWS to remove wolf protections. Since then, the Center and its allies have submitted petitions to relist wolves in the northern Rockies and across the West, which FWS denied. In August 2025, the U.S. District Court for Montana ruled that FWS unlawfully denied the petitions and remanded to FWS for new analysis.”

Was illegal in the first place as it is not the role of Congress to make such a ruling regarding the listing and/or delisting of any species regarding the ESA. Says so int eh Act itself that only federal courts and/or USFWS have such power and that requires public input long before the decision is made. It's one of the things that I will never forgive Sen. Tester for doing back in 2011, he shepherded that rider and made sure it went into that budget bill where it had no business appearing. I reprimanded him for it, as I was one of his constituents at the time.

It was totally illegal but they did it anyway.

I hope there is success in this effort because we're talking about a keystone species that needs to recover as much of its original territory as possible.
