1. Yeah, I see it all the time that a married couple wants to file single

They even want to divvy up the kids so they can get equal deductions. Or one is going to school and they want to not show the income of the other so they can get student grants and such. It's not that they don't understand they can't file "single", it's that they understand they can cheat the system this way. Or a family member or a friend has convinced them they can do it that way.
