59. Well, after moving to town to retire,

I no longer have the room to plant a dozen trees annually. But I try to plant at least one even here, though I'm fast running out of room. Maybe I can start making a donation to the Arbor Foundation or something.

And (snicker,snicker) some of those I've planted here have been, shall we say 'scavenged' - no, 'liberated' - Rose of Sharon saplings from the overgrown property across the back alley. Nobody lives there; the absentee owners are just letting it rot to pieces in the hopes of another housing boom someday, not realizing it will be too far gone to rescue by then. Shame, too, because it was a really fine place when they inherited it. But I don't like them one little bit for a zillion reasons, and occasionally my shovel drags me along on a midnight search and rescue mission, if you know what I mean. I imprinted on Johnny Appleseed as a little bairn and blame it on him, really. At least that's what I was planning to say if the cops ever found out.
