(133 posts)These machines have interpretive code written into them, which has only one purpose: To cheat.
Let's say there are 100 paper ballots fed into an optical scanner that is designed to cheat. We know there are:
50 votes for Bush, and
50 votes for Gore.
So that's 100 votes in total. When the rigged machine counts them, the "interpretive code" can be adjusted to weigh each of those votes with a different value. In this example, the machine gives each of the Gore votes a value of 0.5, and each Bush vote gets a value of 1.5.
The tabulator tells us: Yes, I got 100 votes, and Bush is the winner. He got 75 votes to Gore's 25.
That's how it works. When you have millions of votes, it's very easy to make "interpretive code" changes that are so slight-but-effective, nobody notices. Only a hand-count of the millions of paper ballots will prove the fraud.
