I’m happy that we’ve made this progress, but it’s a sad state of affairs when we get so excited over simply having a candidate for every slot on the ballot. The Republicans have been doing that in Texas for decades. It’s the minimum that a functional political party can do for an election.

Texas was once Blue, but that started changing when Reagan got elected president and the Republicans, as I recall, pretty much took over Texas in the 90s. And it’s not because we (Democrats) don’t have sufficient numbers to win elections in Texas. In my view, it’s because Texas Democratic leadership has sucked for years and years. At the top levels of the Texas Democratic Party they have been nothing but ineffective. The impact of their “suckyness” roles down through the ranks of the Party resulting in Democratic precincts becoming nothing more than coffee klatches for little old ladies in tennis shoes whose grand achievement seems to be getting Democratic volunteers to assist at the polls during elections.

But hey, maybe we’ve started to get our sh*t together and can start doing what we need to be doing; winning elections at the state-wide and district levels. I surely hope so. I’ve lived in Texas since 1975 and lately, for the first time, I’ve been seriously thinking about moving out of Texas. I’d really rather not do that at this stage of life.
