Ultimately, this is their fault.

Product placement ads in news stories should be a revenue stream.

Newspapers are hurting for money, and they are letting it slip through their fingers. They should set up and ad market where this story could say “a soda” (or whatever regionalism) or “a Diet Coke”. Based on story size and prominence, companies can put out bids for specific factual mentions - even more for endorsements, like, if they could get her to say, “I’ll be okay, but I’d rather have a Diet Coke.”

To, you know, make sure to preserve the integrity of journalism.
