Is it still free speech when others take advantage of it?

There's an anecdote, I wish I would remember the details:
A progressive was wearing a T-Shirt with a progressive message near some Tea-Partiers. One of them, an old man, got upset over this blatant display of a political message he doesn't like and said: "You know, I have First Amendment rights!"
