The deadline is fast approaching for the Republican-led General Assembly to redraw North Carolinas political maps.
Lawmakers have until about Nov. 5 to finish redistricting. Theyre about two weeks into the process of drawing new district maps for Congress and the legislature. The schedule for redistricting is so tight because candidate filing for next years primaries is Dec. 6, so the maps need to be done a month beforehand.
The primary elections are March 8, but past state primaries have been in May. Thats left many wondering why the legislature doesnt just delay the election to have more time to draw the maps and gather public comment before theyre approved.
This is compressed, and it doesnt have to be, said Bob Phillips, executive director of Common Cause North Carolina, an advocacy organization that has lobbied for restricting reform.
