6. Having the right to do something doesn't make it a good thing to do

When I lived in California, we had to keep our house closed up one summer with no air conditioning because some very selfish people in our neighborhood would sit in their cars and homes, and blow a ton of pot smoke out the windows, where it would drift into our house if anything was open. My wife has a bad reaction to pot smoke and we had a baby daughter that we didn’t want to expose to the smoke. We couldn’t stop the jerks from being jerks, so we just had to suffer in the heat.

Your right to swing your fist should stop at my face. If you live in a place where you have a right to not wear a mask in public, that doesn’t make it a moral decision. Likewise, having the right to blow pot smoke at other people doesn’t make it an ethical thing to do.
