Senate Democrats: Don't forget Safety Net hospitals [View all]

With worries about potential Medicaid cuts under the Trump Administration, Senate Democrats are urging extra consideration for New York’s ”safety net” hospitals which generally describes institutions that have to serve everyone who walks through their doors regardless of whether they are insured or can pay.

Bronx Democratic Sen. Gustavo Rivera wrote to GOP Majority Leader John Flanagan, noting that Medicaid currently fails to cover all the costs run up by these hospitals and many are operating in the red.

The issue can be fraught because, as Rivera notes, some hospitals have lower Medicaid caseloads but still get safety net funding.

Safety net hospitals are all over the state, from northern New York to New York City and the Capital Region with Albany Medical Center Hospital.
