Welcome to my neck of the woods. In regard to Salem, it is a zoo in the month of October. Unless you arrive with a hotel reservation(with parking) you will want to leave town.
Hundreds of thousands(not kidding) visit close to Halloween.
If you are coming during the first of the month, there are great places to visit. Near Halloween, all of us who live nearby find a route that takes us in another direction to get where we want to go. Salem is a zoo in October.
Happy travels.
