....what could be the root cause of all this anti-social behaviour from such a seemingly large portion of our society.

I relaize that trump and the rightwing are taking full advantage of the willingness of so many people to be abhorent and malicious, and are actually promoting, encouraging, and facilitating this mindset, but what has birthed this mindset to begin with?

I can think of only a few sources of such widespread psychological twisting... constant mass media exposure, commercial marketing efforts specifically designed to spark personal dissatisfaction, endless, competition-based identity modelling (politics, sports, etc), and of course -organized religion.

There's something going on that's dragging a large number of people away from our natural, default "pack" mentality that any species needs for survival, but what is that thing?
