D.C.-area January outlook: Turning colder and maybe whiter [View all]

The month follows the District’s fifth-warmest and fourth-wettest December, and the second-warmest and 39th-driest calendar year.

We project the D.C. area will see fairly typical January temperatures, averaging between 36.5 and 38.5 degrees, compared with the normal of 37.5. We foresee a continuation of above-normal precipitation with the equivalent of about 3 to 5 inches of rain, compared with the normal of 2.86 inches.

Our normal January snowfall is 4.9 inches, and we predict a range of about 4 to 8 inches.
