11. In Northern California, we bundle up

to go to the beach! It's those currents coming down from Alaska that keep the coastal areas cool. There are very few places north of Point Conception near Santa Barbara where you can comfortably go in the ocean for more than a few minutes without a wet suit. On the plus side, it keeps us cool for most of the year and lets the Salinas Valley grow lettuce year round.
